Brass

Brass is primarily composed of copper and zinc. Traditional leaded brass typically exhibits good machinability.

Brass possesses:

• Good machinability

• Good appearance

• Good machinability

• Commonly used in machine parts, hardware, and valve parts

Thread Machining Characteristics

During brass thread machining, chips may exhibit:

• Natural powder chips

• Short chips

However, brass has a high material affinity/adhesion tendency with high-speed steel tools, which may cause:

• Residual yellow copper marks

• Tool surface adhesion

• Reduced machinability

• Abnormal thread surface quality

• Increased tool wear

Thread Tool Material Relationship

Generally, HSS can be used for many brass thread machining operations, but when machining volume increases, adhesion problems become significant, or tool life requirements increase, tungsten carbide thread tools should be further evaluated.
