The relationship between stainless steel and threading tool materials

The selection of tools for threading stainless steel cannot be determined solely by the word "stainless steel."

Further considerations should be made regarding:

• SUS304 / SUS316L / other stainless steel grades

• Final workpiece hardness

• Presence of work hardening

• Thread depth

• Blind or through hole

• Chip length

• Chip evacuation conditions

• Tool-workpiece adhesion

• Cooling and lubrication

• Spindle runout

• Tool holder runout

• Production volume
Generally, high-speed steel materials such as HSS-Co / PM-HSS are important candidates for stainless steel threading. For applications requiring higher wear resistance or specific high-difficulty machining, tungsten carbide or thread end mills can be further evaluated.

Publicly available tool information also categorizes tool materials and grades separately for stainless steel, steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, difficult-to-cut materials, and hard materials.
